Why eliminating spam benefits everyone! Part 3
Desktop Spam Filtering Software.
There are several companies that have developed spam filtering software that users may install on there computer. This software generally integrates with Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express, among others. The software monitors the Inbox after the message is received and analytically decides whether the message received appears to be spam. If the decision is positive the message is moved to another folder named spambox, for example. Thus, leaving only those messages in the Inbox folder that are apparently not spam.

While this method is fairly simple for the user to install and operate, it does not eliminate spam. The user is still receiving every message whether spam or not. This is not only ridiculous but a burden on the mail server(s), which translates to excessive bandwidth usage.

There is a high probability that spam will be found in the user's Inbox because software cannot accurately detect a spam message with 100% certainty.

In addition, wanted messages do end up in the spambox folder by accident. Therefore, a user may need to search hundreds, if not thousands, of messages in both folders to locate a message that he/she knowingly should have received.

This filtering is by far the least likely solution to ending the spam dilemma and it is not cost affective in time or money.

Email Service Providers.

Certified Providers
In my research, I could not believe that a company actually advertises "certified" spam free email? Who certifies spam free services anyway? There is no entity, which certifies such a service. This led me to believe it is just misleading the end-user.

Challenge/Response Providers
Many providers have adopted the Challenge/Response method of spam filtering as a better solution to preventing spam; it is not 100% reliable. The principal is based on the idea that all spam is sent by bulk email sending software, which is not totally accurate.

Let's assume…
you use a local branch of the United States Parcel Service to receive all your mail. As the postmaster receives mail addressed to you, he analyzes it. A letter address to you is very strange based on previous history of the mail you receive. He locates the return address and begins to fill out a postcard, which he will send to the sender. The postcard states that if the original letter that he/she (the sender) sent is from a legitimate person to contact the postmaster at a specified phone number. The sender is to provide the randomly generated number found on the postcard. If the sender complies, the original letter is placed in your box as legitimate mail and not as spam ("junk mail"). See a problem here?

This has two principal flaws.
1) This would block honest advertising campaigns and thereby defeat widely used Internet marketing tools.
2) This allows the sender to be the determining factor whether the message is to eventually end up in the user's Inbox or not.
If you think this 100% eliminates spam from your mailbox, you had better reread the previous few paragraphs again. Many companies are informing their email clients that it is THE solution. It is a joke and all about money. THE correct solution is for the recipient to decide if the sender is legitimate and not the other way around!

In the next part of this series I will summarize my numerous years of research and what I believe the true solution is.
